Doing beats
doomscrolling

When you’re casually reading
about the apocalypse, we’ll
remind you that the antidote
to climate anxiety is action.

System change,
not climate change

It’s not (y)our fucking fault.
When millions hold those in
charge accountable, we can
actually change the system.

Says what you
are actually thinking

When the response from gov’t
and corporations to the
climate crisis is absolute shit.
We’ll say it is. Sorry, mom.

Get well deserved
digital hugs

When you do something good,
get a little prize in the form
of an outdated 90s pun or a
promise of banana bread.

Answers to your intelligent questions

The climate crisis is a f*cking emergency, and there’s no time to give a shit about niceties. The earth’s on fire, oceans are rising, and 1% of the people on the planet are largely responsible for a looming human extinction.

We’re pissed off and you should be too. We’re sorry if you’re offended, but we’ve got bigger vegan fish to fry.

We are. We are 3 co-founders who originally built the Remark app to help everyday people send feedback to businesses about their sustainability practices. It works and is awesome.

But, as we looked around and saw wildfires, droughts, flooding, and the f*cking ocean on fire – and asked ourselves, how can the technology we build help more people make an impact in their daily lives? It has to be dead easy. It has to be fun. And bonus points if it makes greedy corporations and dilly-dallying politicians a wee bit uncomfortable.

This project is an answer to that question that we’re currently testing to see if the world loves it as much as we do.

It’s like a free app for your internet browser. It’s super easy, just navigate to our listing on the extension store. Click “Add to Chrome” (or Firefox, etc) and then voila! Next time you find yourself doom scrolling about climate or the environment, an “UnF*** the Future” tab will pop up and you’ll have the option of taking an easy action to fix the mess we’re in.

The extension scans the title, keywords & description (meta tags, for the wannabe developers among us) of every page you visit in your browser to see if they match our list of trigger words (A cheery group of 100+ words and phrases like “climate crisis” “unprecedented” “heatwave” and “biodiversity loss”). If a page matches the trigger word, the extension will pop up.

If it doesn’t match, then the extension happily sleeps in the background until you are browsing climate doom again. We care about your privacy and do not store your browsing history or any other page data. See our privacy policy for details.

Our biggest request from users has been to show the pop-up more often, so we decided to launch UnF***ables – climate lunch snacks, popping up daily. This feature gives you a one-minute climate action during your lunch hour if you haven’t seen us pop up in a while. Love it? Hate it? Let us know at hello@remark.eco.

Yes, your individual actions matter. But we’re tired of big corporations and big oil pushing the responsibility of the climate crisis onto consumers. It’s not (y)our fucking fault. The system needs to change. We believe your limited time is best spent on the high leverage actions that, when taken collectively, can actually move the climate needle.

In short, we only show actions that push for real change. Here’s the rubric we use to choose the actions we feature:

  • Systemic. We show actions that are focused on systemic levers of change, including policy, corporate action, divestment, lobbying, etc. There may be some individual actions that fit this bill, such as individuals moving their banking to someplace that has divested from fossil fuels or switching your electric bill to support renewable energy.
  • Focused. We don’t allow actions that are super generic and go nowhere. Example: “Sign if you think we should save the rainforest.” Duh. Of course, people want to save the rainforest, but what good does signing do if it doesn’t influence the people destroying rainforests in the first place?
  • Credible. Just. say. no. to greenwashing. There are a lot of bullshit organizations out there that are either funded by the bad guys or don’t actually do anything. We weed them out and only show actions from credible nonprofits and public-benefit-focused organizations.
  • Urgent. We’re in a climate emergency, so why waste time on gradual actions like “BP can you be 5% better”? We don’t have time for that shit. Let’s go for broke on fixing the system and fighting for a livable future. Let’s NOT put bandaids on the apocalypse.
  • Easy(ish). If the action is included in our lineup, it should take 1 minute from click to complete with the tools you have in your hand (your phone or computer).
  • Lighthearted. Giving a shit is exhausting. You know the airline safety, “put your mask on before assisting others” thing. We have to give ourselves breaks of humor and inspiration so we can keep fighting for this planet. And it’s not just for fun, studies have shown humor actually helps sustain hope. So taking a minute to laugh or smile is as important to this movement as anything else.
  • Educational. If you’re here, you’re probably the one at parties yelling over the music asking where the recycling bins are. You’re already the friend that works depressing climate facts into most conversations or the one arguing with your science-denying uncle over the holidays, so we want to arm you with information that we thought was awesome, credible, and impactful so you can keep being the voice of reason in your community.

And finally, if our team rolls our eyes at the obviousness of the action – we won’t include it. You already know to turn off the lights when you leave the room, so we won’t be handing out any gold stars for actions that are on par with breathing.

It means we’re testing this to see whether people like & use this tool to ultimately make an impact. It means that everything may not work quite right – and we ask for your forgiveness. It means we’re still figuring shit out but decided to let you, our climate-fearing friend, into our mess. Welcome. Get comfy. Stay awhile and maybe invite a friend?

Remark (the company behind this project) is a Public Benefit Corporation which technically means we’re a business – though we’re trying to take all the soul / earth-sucking parts out of that equation. We’re scheming & testing a sustainable business model with this project that may include helping orgs that are supporting systemic change find more people (like you!) to take action & support their cause. We’ll always be transparent about what we’re doing in this department.
